Electives

Students with a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) are eligible to enroll in an approved elective course at a local community college such as Skyline College or College of San Mateo.

These courses must be worth at least two (2) college units to count for credit at South San Francisco High School (SSFHS):

3 college units = 10 credits at SSFHS
2 college units = 7 credits at SSFHS (will only cover a 5 credit deficiency)

All courses must be pre-approved via concurrent enrollment form by an SSFHS administrator before the class begins.

AVID is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills. AVID creates a positive peer group for students with intensive academic support such as tutorials and strong student / teacher relationships. College and career exposure is central to the AVID mission. Students in the AVID program are expected to:

Enroll in the AVID elective course in each of their four years of high school;
Take at least two higher-level courses (e.g., honors, AP, college courses) ;and
Apply to a four-year college or university during their high school career.

Applications for admission to the program are available during the course selection process.

Clerical Aide (Grades 11 and 12)

This course is designed to prepare students for employment in a dynamic and professional office environment. Students take on a high-level of responsibility working directly with administrators, counselors, and clerical staff to develop professional communication, customer service, organization, and time management skills. Credit Recovery / Edgenuity (Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12)

Semester Course

This course is designed for students who have become credit deficient in their high school graduation requirements. Edgenuity is the online coursework that allows students to recuperate these credits. Students will be enrolled in the course and will decide on the program through coordination with their high school counselor. This course provides students with an additional learning option during the regular school day. Students will need to develop the skills to become a self-disciplined learner, critical for 21st century workplace and college options. Credits are not earned from enrollment in the section but through the courses completed through Edgenuity’s web-based program. See your counselor for details.

Exploration of attitudes toward learning and college in the context of the Filipino-American experience. Designed to facilitate the transition from high school to college, while taking into account Filipino-American community issues. Includes understanding of the college/university systems, college resources, and developing key student skills such as time management, self-esteem, goal setting, emotional intelligence, and relationship building. Peer Leadership (Grades 11 and 12)

Prerequisite: Interview

This course allows students to work with peers of all grades who need support with academic concerns, organization, decision-making, personal problems, etc. Responsibilities range from facilitating conflict mediation sessions to providing campus tours for inter- and intra-district student transfers. Peer leaders will learn how to practice confidentiality, empathy, and active listening skills. Training for peer leaders takes place in the fall when communication, goal-setting, assertiveness, values decision-making skills, conflict mediation etc., are taught. This is a No-Content area class. Student Leadership (Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12)

Prerequisite: Open to students who are members of a school-sanctioned association and teacher recommendation

The leadership class is designed to facilitate the Student Government program. The class is intended to provide time for Associated Student Body (ASB) members to accomplish their goals and duties as representatives of the student body. Students develop their leadership skills in long and short term goal setting, time management / organization, communication, school and community service, interpersonal relations, problem-solving, team building, and evaluation and reflection. Leadership has two goals: one, increase the positive school culture through academic and social events, and two, help students enrolled in the class become more effective leaders. This includes mastery of the following core leadership skills: communication, planning / organization, problem-solving, constructive feedback / evaluation, writing critically, reflectively, and persuasively; creativity, professionalism, confidence / public speaking, persistence, empathy, and service.
