Counseling

The counseling department of South San Francisco High School supports student achievement through a comprehensive high school counseling program.  We provide the tools and information students need to achieve their personal and academic goals.

Counselors are dedicated to the academic, career, personal, and social development of all students. We work to assess student needs and encourage students to use their critical thinking skills to plan their journey to adulthood. Our ultimate goal is to help students transition to college and career opportunities that will serve them well.

SSFHS counselors can help students:
  • Plan for college;
  • Plan out their four years of high school;
  • Set goals;
  • Obtain tutoring or academic support;
  • Develop strategies for communicating with teachers and other students;
  • Develop study skills; and
  • Explore extracurricular activities.

Counselors adhere to the philosophy that the school counseling program is an essential and integral part of the overall education process. South City High counselors strive to empower students to embrace their full potential and develop the skills necessary to become a productive citizen of a global society in partnership with educators, parents/guardians, community-based organizations, and the school community.

Students have a right to confidentiality, which ensures that whatever discussions occur between counselors and students remains private. Counselors will not discuss these matters with parents, teachers, school administrators, other students, or adults UNLESS: (1) a student or someone they know is being physically or sexually abused or (2) a student plans to hurt themselves or others.

Each student is assigned a counselor based on their last name. Counselors work with students and their families to create an educational plan that can help them fulfill their post secondary goals. The counseling office and college and career center provide information about college, scholarships, jobs, and vocational and occupational materials.

The counseling department also serves as a referral agency to community-based organizations and internal resources. Students are encouraged to visit the counseling office before school, during lunch, or after school. To make an appointment, fill out a "Request to See Counselor" slip or contact Counseling Secretary Ms. Harris for assistance.

What better books can there be than the book of humanity."
